The Worst Person in the World (2021)

I know adding an entertaining and personal activity in this processfolio might seem a bit odd.
But after watching The Worst Person in the World (Joachim Trier, 2021), I (accidentally) found some part of it is somehow a bit close to what I’ve been experiencing design field. I did get some inspiration and reflection from the film.
The main character, Julie, keeps changing study programmes, jobs, changing relationships, changing her direction in her life. At first, it looks like she is confused, unstable, or even wasting time. But the more I follow her story, the more I realise: yes, maybe she wants find the right answer, but the most important thins is that, she’s just trying to figure herself out in this lost process, slowly, messily, and through every indecisions and decisions in life experience.
In my design career, I often felt the same. Often, I think I probably just made the worst design in the world during making, the draft I made is really too rough. So, I kept refining my designs again and again. Not only because I wanted to make them good enough, but because each version help me figure out something “right? wrong?” or “enough.”
From the outside, these messy try-outs might look like confusion. But actually, every failed test is just one part of my life (or my design?). Just like Julie in the film, I didn’t always know where I was going, but I just keep learning from making right/wrong decisions.
Most of the time, it just happens that we need to go in these circles. (Although it sometimes could be so painful to go through this.)
