NIPPON VENDING MACHINE 日本自動販売機

2024 Winter
Technical Support Gerard Leysen
Size 180*90mm
Paper Arena Rough Natural 300g
Colour CMYK

Created in winter 2024, this work reinterprets a photograph I took in Okinawa with an Olympus mju-ii analogue camera. The vending machine, a symbol of Japanese daily life, was transformed into a CMYK silkscreen print. Using halftone separations, I printed in the sequence of Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black, with the vivid red emerging from the overlap of yellow and magenta. Slight misalignments and variations in hand pressure gave each print a unique mood—some bright and lively, others cooler and more melancholic. The series, later bound together with classmates’ works, became a small exhibition in book form, celebrating the beauty of imperfection in printmaking.
