Feedback with Jan 25.11.2025 04.12.2025
The cross-context coaching session was first planned for 25 November at M HKA, but a public strike made travel impossible. I asked teacher Jan for a new meeting on 4 December, and we talked at M block in the afternoon instead.
He commented on my recent print tests, that I seemed to only focus on making prints look imperfect on purpose. He asked me to think deeper about my own voice: what problems do I meet when I design and what pressures come from inside and from outside?
We listed some daily struggles from graphic design. I am often afraid to say a work is finished, so I keep fixing tiny details. Deadlines and client rules can stop / extend the process from outside, yet inside I still doubt my decision. We wondered if making many versions could help me see a clear stopping point and build confidence to live with that choice. The real goal is to trust my intuition and my decision-making, not only the clock or the brief.
Jan suggested me trying to treat the final jury date as one firm deadline and, until then, allowing my process to run without extra pauses. At some moment the work must stop, and that moment should feel relevant, not just later or “better”. We agreed that a simple method is not exsisted; I always need a way to test when to stop and to note why I stop.
He shared two references. Erik Kessels’ book Failed It! shows how designers use mistakes as fuel. Jackson Pollock’s work at MoMA reminds us that a piece can look uncontrolled yet carry strong intention. Both examples ask the same question: who decides the end, and why?
These notes will guide the next phase. I will record each time I choose to end / continue a piece, write the reason, and check later if that reason still feels right.
